Silver Linings Playbook

Silver_Linings_Playbook_PosterReview by Lucía Santiago Dantés.

Finally I had the chance to watch Silver Linings Playbook. It seemed to me more drama than comedy but it’s a good story. The film is totally character driven. No special effects, no exotic locations or fancy wardrobe all the flamboyance comes from the character’s persona rather than what is tangible on the screen. It’s also not an original script but the adaptation of a book by the same name written by  Matthew Quick but written for the big screen and directed by David O. Rusell.

The story revolves about  a man who was reluctantly released from a mental institution: Pat (Bradley Cooper) was confined at a mental institution after brutally assault the man his wife was having an affair with. after finding out his wife. He also has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. His mother (Jacky Weaver) takes him home where he finds out he has lost his wife, house and job. His father (Robert Deniro) is a baseball fan who’s very superstitious man with his team and by his behavior you kind of suspect that the apple never falls to far from the tree. Pat is in denial, he firmly believes he can get back his life as it was. At a friend’s dinner he meets Tiffany Maxwell (Jennifer Lawrence) Tiffany has some issues on her own too, after untimely passing of her husband she also shows erratic behavior and starts having romances with everybody at the office. Although she is also a nutcase she bravely admits it and proposes Pat to help her being her dance partner and she promises to help him getting back his ex wife and so both will solve their problems. They both start well but soon their own insecurities gets in their way and that leads them to

As someone said before this is an actor’s movie. The film is a bit slow the first 20 minutes but after the first act it becomes more interesting. It is clear that Jennifer Lawrence’s acting is one of the strongest details of the film but Bradley Cooper  also proves his skills as an actor and shows why he was also nominated for an Oscar too (He lost to Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)). Besides acting the film is well done with a classic mise en scene, great locations that makes it look extremely realistic and finally it also has a classic editing. All of it together, makes it look like a classic film already. Silver Linings Playbook won many awards over most all film festivals this year. Jennifer Lawrence won the Academy Award for Best Actress, among many other including the Golden Globe. There’s not much to say about without spoiling the story so just watch and enjoy the movie. Needless to say Jennifer Lawrence won my respect in 2010 when I first saw “Winter’s Bone” and it was a great surprise when I her name pop among the Oscar nominations for Best Actress. This is a film that you have to watch if you like JLaw’s performance. Without a doubt she is a critic’s favorite and for a good reason!
