Thor The Dark World

The dark World was everything that I expected for a Hollywood sequel and the new Marvel universe in film. I wouldn’t say it was better but just as good as the first installment. The film follows the story after Thor (2011) and the big alien invasion in Avengers (2012). Thor the Dark World has enough elements to please audiences around the globe: Marvel’s comic universe background and references, adventure, romance, and great entertainment.

Let’s recap. It’s been 2 years since Thor’s first visit to Earth but only one since Loki tried to conquest Earth with the Tesseract; now both in Asgard. Thor is still battling other words to bring peace to the nine realms, while Loki is still imprisoned for his crimes on Earth. The film also explains at the very beginning about this dark destructive force known as the Aether possessed by the Dark Elf Malekith and used to destroy worlds. Bor (Thor’s grandfather) fought against  them and put an end to the dark elves project to destroy the universe. Since then the Aether was hidden in a stone column in a place “where no one can find it”, inside what look like a huge asteroid lost in space.  Back to the present Odin reminds Thor he has to start settling down as he is on age. But his heart and mind is still on earth. After a while he decides to check on her but Heimdall (Idris Elba) can’t find her. Back on earth Jane and Darcy (Kat Dennings) are investigating a strange portal in an abandoned industrial building. There she accidentally falls into it and ends up being exposed to the Aether, and that’s why Heimdall can’t find her.Thor decides to go to Earth and find out what’s going on. He finds her but something is wrong with her deciding to take her home to find out what’s causing her strange power.  Chaos emerge to the city when Malekith the Dark Elf, unexpectedly returns to the city to claim the weapon who might destroy the universe.

As for the credits, be prepared to wait until the very end as it has 2 extra scenes that are very important to the film. The first one, before the rolling titles is all about introducing a new character (although very famous for those comic scholars) The Collector (Benicio del Toro) who is entrusted with the Aether, by Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and Volstagg (Ray Stevenson).

While the second final scene (after the rolling credits) we can see Thor talking to who he thinks is his father Odin but is Loki (Tom Hiddleston) actually. And he lets him abdicate to the throne in order to be with Jane.

Both scenes announces the plot for next Marvel movie “Guardians of the Galaxy”  with a tentative release of August 1st 2014.
