Review by Lucia Santiago Dantes
Mockingjay by itself wouldn’t be a great movie if it wasn’t for the fact that is part of the series of books taken into the cinematic world. Luckily for the franchise, the film was popular and long awaited for legions of fans around the world.
Compared to the other 2 films, Mockingjay has less action and melodrama but it gains in mental games. No more hunger games but real games. Yes, everybody throws dirt at each other. In one hand we see President Snow (Donald Sutherland) trying to control the rebellion inspired by Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence). The film picks up where Catching Fire ends, six months after Katniss destroy the dome and is rescued leaving behind several tributes, including Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) among them. She is now inside District 13. Over there, President Coin (Julianne Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Phillip Seymour Hoffman†) convince Katniss to become the poster girl for the rebellion. She is reluctant but when she finds out Peeta is alive she agrees under the condition Peeta and the other tributes must be rescued.
In district 13 Katniss reunites with Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) who believes Peeta is a traitor, along with the rest of the people, as Peeta is now urging the rebelion to stop. Katniss believes he’s been force to act like that. Meanwhile President Snow decides to attack the districts to impose order and keep the Capitol as the ruler. He also had Peeta hijacked with tracker venom in order to brainwash him to believe Katniss is an evil mutation. So when the rebellion rescue him, he’s already a weapon to use against Katniss.
Mockingjay is all about exposing both sides of Panem, the evil and the good. And sets up the tone for the final confrontation. The Capitol richness based on the slavery condtions from the other districts in order to keep the rich and powerful people with the status “they deserve”. Most of the people from the Capitol doesn’t know how bad is outside the big city so the rebellion succeeds on broadcasting a pirate signal and expose President Snow true colors.
We see a few new characters but still great casting for them:
President Alma Coin is played by Julianne Moore. Coin is in charge of District 13 and leader of the rebellion against the Capitol.
Cressida, the girl in charge of filming Katniss visits to the rebellion along with her camera crew, is played by actress Natalie Dormer. If the face seems familiar… well she is! specially if you are a Game of Thrones fan! She also plays the rich and beautiful Margaery Tyrell, in the popular Tv Series. Margaery is the one who steals Sansa’s fiancée King Joffrey Baratheon. Capisce now?
The film opened with revenues of 123 millions at the weekend box office but it was considered a disappointment compared to Catching Fire which made 158 millions on its weekend debut. Still Mockingjay Part I managed to be one of the grossest box office hit on their opening week only compared to “Transformers: Age of Extinction.” which had 100 million dollars on their debut weekend during 2014.
